Larry Perez has taught math in the Mathematics, Science and Engineering Division at Saddleback College for ten years. Prior to coming to Saddleback College he was an adjunct faculty member at Irvine Valley College, Coastline College and California State University at Fullerton. At Saddleback College, he devotes fifty per cent of his time in teaching developmental math course. He teaches course ranging from pre-algebra through the Calculus Series.
Larry’s favorite class to teach is pre-algebra. This can clearly be seen in the web site he developed for pre-algebra. The web site, http://www.saddleback.edu/faculty/lperez/algebra2go/prealgebra, is just one example of his devotion to his students and his subject matter. It is no surprise that Larry’s devotion to his students and subject area was honored twice. In 2008-2009, he was the Saddleback College Professor of the Year, and in 2010, he was the Orange County Community College Professor of the Year.
In his ten years of teaching, he has also developed some useful teaching ideas and tips that can be useful to all of us. These tips include purchasing and reading the lecture notes captured by his top students. Larry had found that this approach not only is a means of assessing his teaching style but also allows him to be more aware of his own personal teaching style. By doing this, Larry has refined his teaching style so that it complements the learning style of his developmental math students. Larry has also spent much time and thought on his teaching philosophy. To read his philosophy, please click this link. It is well worth reading.
In addition to his busy teaching schedule, Larry has also served as Faculty Association representative for the Math, Science and Engineering Division. Larry is also completing his Ed.D in Educational Leadership, which should be completed in 2010.
Prior to his career in teaching, Larry served six years in the U.S. Navy as a Reactor Operator aboard a Los Angeles Class Fast Attack Submarine. Larry is a native Southern Californian. He was born and raised in Pico Rivera. He and his wife Georgette both teach mathematics.
